At first sight, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising it doesn’t look much different from its predecessor, and that’s no wonder. The first game was fully used as a basis for this new version, as it was the most viable alternative, according to the developer, to improve your netcode and add cross-platform multiplayer.

In 2020, the game had come out at the beginning of the pandemic and this ended up showing how the old network code, which was based on delay, was unsustainable for fostering fighting game communities. Simply adding rollback netcode to the old game, which is a much more reliable technology, would have been nearly as expensive as producing a sequel, so this was the path taken.

To compensate for this fact, the game brings new gameplay mechanics that promise to completely change the way matches are played. The main one is the raging strike, which is a strong impact that serves to break the opponent’s guard and open the way for a combo. In case of a hit, it is possible to spend a fraction of the special bar to perform a quick charge called Raging Chain.

Characters also gained a more powerful version of their specials.. These techniques are called Ultimate Skill and promise to give fighters even more identity, but they have their own applications. The old auto-combo, which was done by pressing the same button three times, now has variations to confuse the opponent with low or overhead strikes.

Speaking of characters, the game’s starting roster features 28 fighters, including all that were released in the previous game and four new ones. Among the new ones are siegfried, indigo, Nier It is Grimnir. Cygames has also announced a Season Pass that promises to add six more characters – which have not yet been revealed.

Finally, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising features a rather unusual game mode: the Grand Bruise Legends. The idea is that players, using their favorite avatars, participate in casual minigames in the style Fall Guys. There are tests of survival, racing against obstacles and even stacking objects as fast as possible. This promises to be a fun way to take a break from fighting.

It will be possible to play for free

To get around the price issue, Cygames announced that Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will have a free edition at launch. It will be possible to download at no additional cost and play the online modes – ranked, casual, lobby and Grand Bruise Legends itself – with paying users. Private rooms, however, are not available in this version.

The free edition also guarantees access to four fighters, which are not yet known, and the first part of the Story Mode, which will have a total of three sections. It will also be possible to upgrade to the full version at any time and transfer user progress.
